Took a wee detour on our journey to find the Fortingall Yew. A fascinating piece of history, and if only it could talk.
It's located in the Churchyard next to the hotel, and there's no charge to get in.
Loved the paving stones leading up to the stone wall surrounding the tree. Very clever, and thought provoking.
A once in a lifetime experience to say you’ve seen one of three oldest trees that dates back to BC! And the Parish that the tree is on has some really rich history too. A great quick stop that is worth a moment. We just happened to stumble upon this site and are happy we did. We had fun exploring the grounds and learning some history. The grounds are beautiful!
Beautiful church and the Yew Tree is protected and fascinating! Both were worth the drive! We understand that Pontius Pilate was just a boy nearby in Scotland when this tree was younger.
The Fortingall Yew Tree is amazing, apparently being over 5000 years old, and POSSIBLY the oldest living thing in the World! (🤔).
There is a thought-provoking path laid near the tree that reminds you of how many people(s) are likely to have seen it before you.
Read the contents of the information board in one of my images to find out about the tree's phenomenal original trunk circumference of 17 metres! ... AND why it isn't that big now...
While you're here, check out the inside of the church and appreciate the lovely, but plain, architecture of it.
The lovely 'barrel' roof reflects the shape of Noah's ark 😍
Five stars to the oldest chap in Scotland, this stunning Yew Tree which nobody actually knows how old is. Probably not 5000 y.o. , certainly more than 2000 though. And five stars to the lovely lady working there as "the keeper of the tree", a gorgeous guardian who has been witnessing people coming from all over the world to visit the tree for several decades.
This was a super interesting experience. It’s mind boggling to try and picture how big the tree used to be, even with the markers in place! I loved that the church was open and had additional information about Yew trees as a whole.
It was well worth us taking a detour in our journey to visit this historic tree... I felt quite humble and struggled to fully appreciate the age of this living thing. How wonderful that it is still alive, but how sad that people have removed souvenirs, making the wall necessary. The church has sensitively and tastefully created a special walk way to the tree's viewing place and the churchyard itself is well worth a bit of exploration.
If you like history and nature its a very special spot if not you probably won't enjoy it. Be aware parking is limited and on Sundays the church may have local services. It's a donation box at the tree. Make sure you read the slabs on the floor when you walk up to it
